Smart-growth strategies allow communities to grow in a way that preserves open spaces, minimizes pollution and habitat loss, maximizes economic prosperity, and is equitable to all. To preserve the resources we value most and create vibrant communities, we must be aware of the relationship between development patterns and quality of life and recognize that no town can develop in a vacuum and that health, environmental, and quality-of-life issues do not stop at a town's borders.
