New Jersey Future Statement on Executive Order 89
TRENTON, Oct. 29, 2019 — New Jersey Future Executive Director Peter Kasabach released the following statement on Governor Murphy’s Executive Order 89, establishing a Statewide Climate Change Resilience Strategy and to create the Climate and Flood Resilience Program and an Interagency Council on Climate Resilience:
“The Governor’s announcement today on climate change and resilience is a refreshing acknowledgement of the threats facing our communities, whether rising seas on our coasts or increasingly frequent and severe rainfall inland. New Jersey, one of the most flood-prone states, needs to start planning with tools such as a sea-level rise standard and a design storm in order to mitigate the economic consequences of climate change. Requiring the consideration of climate change and resilience in the state planning process is an important step, and the Climate and Flood Resilience Program should make its number one priority establishing the risk levels for towns to plan to.”
