Christie Releases New State Strategic Plan

Gov. Chris Christie today released a new State Strategic Plan, a blueprint for state investment in sustainable economic growth. The governor also announced Executive Order No. 78, authorizing a cabinet-level steering committee to drive implementation. The State Strategic Plan is intended to meet both the spirit and the statutory requirements of the State Planning Act.

New Jersey Cities Breathe Sigh of Relief

Gov. Christie has put transitional aid to cities, accompanied by oversight mechanisms, back in the budget, but has said he wants to wean cities off this aid. Given a half-century of disinvestment in urban areas, that may not be possible as soon as he would like. Until cities’ property tax bases reverse their decline, state aid will still be needed to deliver critical services.

After being restored to the budget that was passed by the Legislature last week, funding for the Department of Transportation’s Transit Village program was removed from the FY 2012 spending plan signed by Gov. Chris Christie on June 30.

The governor intends to pull the plug on a worthy effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on imported oil. While most of our neighbors would receive millions of dollars from RGGI to promote energy efficiency, renewable energy and state-of-the-art electric generation facilities, New Jersey would not.
