Working for Smart Growth:
More Livable Places and Open Spaces

Stormwater Center

October 2022 marks the 10-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy devastating coastal and riverine communities throughout New Jersey. Sandy was a turning point, a rude awakening that climate change-fueled storms are here to stay, and exposed our vulnerability to flooding from heavy rains and storm surge throughout the state.

In the 10 years since Superstorm Sandy, we’ve maintained a commitment to better preparing New Jersey for future storms.

In the immediate aftermath of Sandy, New Jersey Future held a conference with Monmouth University to assess what could be learned from the disaster. We also worked to implement a local disaster recovery planning program that embedded planners in six communities to help towns manage their recovery, and plan for a more resilient future.

In the years since, we’ve maintained a commitment to addressing our state’s preparedness for future storms, and rising to the challenge presented by climate change. Below you will find resources to implement green infrastructure, establish a stormwater utility, or join our call for more transparent flood disclosure for homebuyers and renters in New Jersey.
