NJDOT Proposes to Restore Transit Village Program Funding
March 30th, 2012 by Chris Sturm
The Proposed Transportation Capital Program for FY 2013 posted today on the New Jersey Department of Transportation website includes a $1 million allocation for the Transit Village program, which restores funding to the FY 2011 level. Last year, NJDOT’s Proposed Capital Program eliminated funding for the Transit Villages. (The Legislature tried to restore it but the effort fell victim to Gov. Christie’s line-item veto.)
The Proposed Capital Program also recommends $1 million in funding for the Safe Streets to Transit Program, which had seen its funding reduced by half last year to $500,000.
Let’s hope both proposals make it into the final budget. The Proposed Capital Program must be passed by the legislature as part of the budget process and then signed into law by the governor. If the proposed funding for the Transit Village program and the Safe Streets to Transit program stays in, communities with some of the state’s most robust real estate markets will have access to these important resources.
